Why Chinese & Chosen?

While reporting in 2008, we stumbled upon an unlikely festival on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was the 9th annual Egg Roll and Egg Cream Festival. We watched with curiosity as these two seemingly disparate cultures blended together on a historic Eldridge Street block, wedged in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. After five months of research, we found that this unique combination of Chinese and Jewish heritage, culture and religion have a rich history, much of it right here in New York City.

Our objective was to stand smack in the middle of this intersection of culture and discover the people who inhabit it. They told us dozens of fascinating stories about family, food, religion and race. (Not to mention a dozen more involving stereotypes, holidays and, improbably, the KGB.)
